ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Ellie Jones had wanted to see Shen Yun Performing Arts since it first began, and that long-awaited wish came true on March 14, when she and her husband Teddy celebrated her birthday by attending a performance at the Stifel Theatre.

“I’ve been waiting since the show first began from the very beginning, so many, many years, to come. And my husband surprised me with the tickets. And I was very very pleased. It was fabulous,” said Mrs. Jones, an art teacher at an elementary school and someone who has always done art, music, and dance.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“I enjoyed all of it,” Mr. Jones said, and even more so because it made his wife so happy.

Mrs. Jones said the traditional culture that Shen Yun brought to life—a divinely inspired culture—meant a lot.

“I love a lot of their values and traditions. I think they’re very, very important,” she said. “They are showing just the peace and kindness, and being able to have the harmony and things is a lot of importance that they’re showing as well.”

“I think anytime you can show positivity and kindness, every little bit can make a difference,” she said.

Mrs. Jones said that they showed these positive values despite the negativity or violence they may face. As many learned during the performance, Shen Yun cannot perform in China, where its members would be subject to religious persecution by the Chinese communist regime.
She said that Shen Yun’s tours across the country and around the world showed that they were trying to use “traditions and kindness” for the betterment of people.

“I liked how they showed that trying to just rise above, and the kindness, and just trying to show that continually trying to better their country through the balance of the arts and using that to bring out better in people in their society,” Mrs. Jones said.
