ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Peter Kemp, a musician, and Michelle Ravelle, a dancer, enjoyed the artistry and talent they saw in Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Stifel Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 16.
“Ah, that was wonderful. Super acrobatic, super talented, wonderful dancing, terrific music,” said Mr. Kemp.
“It was beautiful. Beautiful artistry,” Ms. Ravelle said.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
Traditional Chinese culture is divinely inspired culture, and the heavenly scenes and divine beings Mr. Kemp saw in the performance reminded him of his own Christian faith.
One of the standout musical moments for Mr. Kemp was a solo performed by an erhu virtuoso. The two-stringed, ancient Chinese instrument is known for its wide range of possibilities, and the virtuoso delivered a moving performance for Mr. Kemp.
“Oh, it felt wonderful, terrific. It was amazing,” he said. “Very emotional, very soothing, you just feel very good and very nice.”
Ms. Ravelle admired the strength, flexibility, and artistry of the dancers, and felt inspired in her own work.
“It was beautiful. It gave me some fun ideas for choreography,” she said. “I just appreciated that there was a lot of thought and there was meaning behind all of the movement.”
