ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Jason Bercovitch, district director for Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), attended Shen Yun Performing Arts on March 14, afterward presenting the artists a proclamation on behalf of the congressman’s office, commending the artists for the accomplishments and mission.

“Everybody should come see it. First of all, it’s a great combination of dance, of art, of culture, and of music, but at the same time, you can really learn something,” Mr. Bercovitch said after seeing Shen Yun at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, this year set to perform around 800 performances across five continents for nearly 1 million audience members.
Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.

Mr. Bercovitch was impressed with this cultural revival. He enjoyed learning about the divinely inspired traditional Chinese culture and found many universal values within it.

“I thought the show was amazing,” he said. “It’s incredible.”

“It’s just, I think, especially nowadays, there’s a lot of bad news that’s out there. There’s a lot of tension that’s out there. And this just reminds me about the beauty of culture and history, and this is the type of thing that we should all be celebrating. It’s performances like this, and the beauty of the culture and the tradition,” Mr. Bercovitch said.

Mr. Bercovitch said he hadn’t realized how important faith was in traditional Chinese culture. Many audience members learned during a Shen Yun performance that though the Chinese communist regime is officially atheist, prior to its 75-rule, China had been a spiritual civilization for millennia.

“I was very touched by the inclusions and faith and God and higher power in the performance and the message that was given, messages like that,” Mr. Bercovitch said. He said he saw faith play out in many ways throughout the performance, including in a story-based dance vignette where a restaurant owner protects someone who needs it.

“The message to me is to always keep the faith. So if we believe in a higher power, it’s amazing what we can accomplish if we keep the faith and really do good,” he said. “Whatever faith one follows, the text generally teaches us to do good and to help others. And I think that that’s a message that everybody can take in no matter what their belief is.”

Mr. Bercovitch said it was unfortunate that Shen Yun could not perform in China, expressing support for freedom of expression and Shen Yun’s mission.

“I think that we should be celebrating the culture, celebrating traditions, and the more that we allow people to express themselves and how they believe really, the better it is,” he said.
