BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Like many audience members, Jay Ramey had known about Shen Yun Performing Arts for quite a few years and always wanted to go.

“I’ve been wanting to see it,” he said. He told his companion, Connie Lee, “We need to go. I want to go see it.”

“Spectacular show. The music is unbelievable ... the stories are fantastic. I really enjoy it,” he said at the BJCC Concert Hall on March 16. Mr. Ramey is retired from the military and Pentagon and is a business owner. Ms. Lee is a registered nurse and the director of the quality department at a hospital.

“Oh, it’s beautiful. Beautiful performance,” said Ms. Lee.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company.

Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
While watching the story-based dances that brought to life ancient legends, myths, and history, Mr. Ramey recalled numerous Bible stories with striking similarities.

Mr. Ramey and Ms. Lee are Christians, he explained, and although he saw in the traditional Chinese culture presented different faiths from his own, he also saw parallels that resonated and had him reinforcing his own faith.

“And all of what is depicted in the Shen Yun is actually almost like all the disciples that Jesus Christ had taught,“ he said. ”There’s so many similarities that it’s unbelievable.”

“The biggest message that I get from it is that you have to have faith and you have to believe. And don’t lose your faith and don’t lose your belief. And share it with others,” he said. “That’s the message I get. It’s very strong, it’s very good.”

Ms. Lee agreed, saying that as a Christian, she could bring her own beliefs into it.

Ms. Lee said she loved the gorgeous costumes, their beautiful colors, and the way they made use of long, flowing sleeves that the dancers could manipulate like props through the air. She said that she enjoyed the stories, which touched on serious topics but often included a humorous or playful tone as well.

She said the most moving moment was probably a miracle that occurred in one of the stories.

“He stood to his beliefs, and then he was rewarded. So I felt, that was very touching,” she said.
