SAKAI, Japan—A trailer of Shen Yun Performing Arts inspired Kenzou Tagawa and his wife to come see the performance. The couple was enchanted by the elegance of Shen Yun’s dancers.

“The dancers’ spins were incredible, and the way they extended their legs was breathtaking. That’s what stood out to me the most,” shared Mr. Tagawa.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It was absolutely amazing. You could really feel the years of training and dedication through the dancers—reaching such a high level of excellence clearly takes years of hard work,” said Mrs. Tagawa.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, and in all of the five millennia, everyone—from the Emperor to the people—harbored a deep respect for the divine.

“The performance beautifully portrayed the presence of divine beings, and as I watched, I felt a quiet hope for my own salvation ... I believe in the existence of the divine. I feel there is much more in this world than what we see, and we shouldn’t become attached to material things,” shared Mrs. Tagawa.

Shen Yun’s costumes and backdrops are designed to reflect different periods of Chinese history. Audience members often comment on how beautifully colors are used in the production.

“The colors were so dreamlike, and the stage effects were outstanding. The way the colors were combined was truly striking—I never imagined they could be paired like that,” said Mrs. Tagawa.

On the afternoon of January 11, 2025, Terai Nobuo, a member of the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce, attended the second Shen Yun performance at the Sakai Performing Arts Center.

Mr. Terai recalled how impressed he was with Shen Yun’s opening scene.

“When the curtain rose, the scene was breathtaking and moving. The performers’ expressions and movements had a celestial quality, and as soon as they took the stage, they radiated a powerful presence that immediately captivated the audience. It was truly incredible,” he said.

Shen Yun’s animated backdrop also surprised Mr. Terai. He was impressed with how the artists leaped into the backdrop.

“Wow, what kind of performance is this? The stage effects and the performers’ interaction were so well coordinated, and the way the show was presented left a powerful impression on me,” he said.

Shen Yun’s eight companies are touring the world for many months each season. In order to prepare for touring, the artists must rehearse tirelessly to give the audience their best every time.

“Every movement was flawless—from the delicate hand gestures to the graceful, light-footed steps and the flawless synchronization of the group dances. Reaching this level of precision is beyond imagination, and the performers’ dedication is truly admirable,” said Mr. Terai.

The singers of Shen Yun are trained in the bel canto style of singing. The digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text so that audiences around the world can follow along.

“It was outstanding! The tenor’s performance was full of genuine emotion. I paid close attention to the Japanese lyrics, and the message really resonated with me. It felt like a powerful call, delivering an important message to the audience,” said Mr. Terai.

Shen Yun’s performance reflects ancient virtues and ideals. Mr. Terai found this to be a very important thing for today’s society.

“In today’s society, many traditional values have been forgotten. Shen Yun brings these ideals back to life, and the messages are incredibly meaningful. I hope more people have the opportunity to experience such a performance,” he said.
