NEW YORK CITY—Like many, Diane and Howard Bressler had been interested in Shen Yun Performing Arts ads for years, and decided this year would finally be the year they would see it. It proved an emotional and uplifting experience for the Bresslers, who said they could feel the energy and dedication of the artists.

“I loved it. The experience was very dynamic because I see the coordination and the balance and the intersection that people had to participate in this amazing show,” said Mrs. Bressler, a therapist.

“Just want to thank them for their dedication,” added Mr. Bressler, a lawyer. “I mean, the amount of years it must’ve taken to get this good at what they do. So I’m very appreciative of everything that they’ve dedicated to, to get this good.”

“Beautifully choreographed and very interesting to see the history of China’s culture and all the different dances from the different regions and the different ethnicities,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

Mrs. Bressler agreed with her husband, appreciating the artists’ efforts.

“It’s just phenomenal that they put so much effort and so much dedication to come up with something like that. And as you know, to put something like that together, it takes a lot of effort and dedication,” she said.

The heart the artists had poured into their art came through on stage, Mrs. Bressler saw.

It was energy that came “from the inner soul,” she said.

As a mental health professional, Mrs. Bressler said she has been interested in traditional Chinese medicine, which speaks of energy and its effect on health. She knew the artists of Shen Yun also meditate and practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that teaches the three principles of truth, compassion, and tolerance, but is being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.

One of the story-based dance vignettes touched on this persecution while spotlighting real events in China today, and Mrs. Bressler said she cried during that program, moved by the sadness of the reality of this religious persecution. Other moments made her emotional in another way, she added.
“It’s very peaceful,” she said of the music. “I actually was closing my eyes to listen to the different musicians—the instruments that they were playing ... and as soon as they opened the curtain, I got very—I’m going to get very emotional, very emotional.”

The artists’ passion also moved Bobby Fox, a lawyer, who attended the performance on March 30 with his wife, Phyllis, a nutritionist.

“I think that the background of the dancers, their abilities, they must have studied for years ... at least 10 years each, the dancers studying, practicing. So it’s very impressive, the technique and how well qualified they are,” Mr. Fox said.

“It’s very uplifting and also the orchestra, it’s a live orchestra, so that helps with the special effects too. The whole thing, the way they did this, is very well orchestrated, and it’s impressive. It really is. People that haven’t seen it would not know until they come here and interact in real life. I’m glad we came.”

Mr. Fox said he has studied Chinese martial arts and has had an interest in traditional Chinese culture for many years, and so he was drawn to Shen Yun’s revival of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“You have all different cultures here,” he added. “But at the end of the day, I think it all draws you toward a central theme.”

He saw a positive central theme in Shen Yun.

“It shows a message of peace, that also you can persevere and you can break through your problems and there’s maybe a good thing on the other side,” he said. “You just got to give some devotion and time and hopefully peace and energy come from it. That’s the message I took from it so far.”

Mrs. Fox said it was a performance she also thought people should see for themselves.

“I love the show, I recommend it, and I would like people to come and see it. The dancing is magnificent,” she said.

Todd Drost, who saw the performance with his wife on March 30, said the couple often attend performances for special events, but Shen Yun was unlike anything they had ever seen.

Like many other audience members, he was amazed by the talent, dedication, and artistry he saw on stage.

“I can’t imagine how much time and effort and dedication and devotion it will take, but I’m sure their whole lives have been dedicated to everything that they do and study them,” he said. To the artists, he added that he was “extremely impressed. Thank you so much.”

The performance left a big impression on Mr. Drost, who described an ethnic dance set in the snowcapped Himalayas, a classical Chinese dance where the female dancers wore long, flowing sleeves they manipulated through the air like water, heavenly scenes, and musical solos.

One of the most soul-stirring moments for Mr. Drost was when a bel canto virtuoso took to the stage.

“Some of the words really resonated with me,” he said. “This is no accident. We’re here by a higher power and basically for each other. That’s just my personal feeling. You have a deep soul with the song, you know. You have a really deep soul with the song.”
