VANCOUVER, Canada—Mothers will go to great lengths to give their children a good life. Kathy Zhang and her daughter immigrated to Canada a year ago and when they were given the opportunity, they decided to see a performance that they cannot see in China.

“It was well done. I found it astounding,” Ms. Zhang said of Shen Yun Performing Arts. “We really can’t see this in China but we have heard of it. So this is our first year here and I brought my daughter to grab the opportunity to see it. This is so my daughter can understand traditional Chinese culture from a young age.”

Shen Yun is based in New York and is dedicated to presenting the true Chinese culture—from China before communism—to audiences around the world.

“I think this shows the way Chinese people are supposed to be. Chinese people were like this before,” Ms. Zhang said.

China has 5,000 years of history but when the Chinese Communist Party took power, much of its traditional culture was destroyed.

“Being in this country, we Chinese should be proud to have such a great performance representing us,” Ms. Zhang said.

The dances that Shen Yun present tell stories of past and present day China. One of these stories moved Ms. Zhang to tears.

“I liked the last dance the best because COVID is something we all experienced in China. What they presented on stage was so realistic. For us to see hope in a place without hope and to see our chance to be saved, I liked this dance the most. At that moment, my tears were about to fall,” Ms. Zhang expressed.

Being in Canada, Shen Yun is able to perform and express what it wants freely. Ms. Zhang also feels that Canada is a better place to raise her daughter.
“Being here, we can be relaxed. We don’t need to have so many worries. The most important thing is that this is a better environment for by daughter to grow up in,” shared Ms. Zhang.
She shared that everyone should come and experience Shen Yun.

“I think everyone should come see this performance—it is truly beautiful. If you don’t come, it would be such a shame,” she said.
