GOLD COAST, Australia—Artist Anthony Pieters expressed his admiration for Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, saying the production quality is “way higher than any pop star could put on.”

Having just experienced Shen Yun for the first time at the Gold Coast’s Home Of The Arts in Queensland, Australia, on March 14, Mr. Pieters, who creates fine art and is also a performer, said he appreciated the quality of entertainment being offered by the performers.

“It was a flawless show. The choreography, everyone was in sync, no matter who was at the back or the side and who was centre, everyone was moving in unison. I’ve never seen anything like that in person before,” he said.

“This show was absolutely next level. ... I can definitely appreciate all the hard work that goes into it. And the technique, a lot of the dance moves I would imagine are very difficult to execute, let alone individually but together as a group. So I could definitely appreciate all the hard work and effort that was put into it.”
Mr. Pieters also spoke highly of the Shen Yun dancers’ story-telling ability, as using only their physical bearing, they were able to communicate to the audience the narrative and emotions of the stories told, inspired by “China before communism.”

Shen Yun tours the world every year with all-new choreography on a mission to revive the rich cultural heritage of China’s 5,000 years of civilisation that was almost lost in modern times—taking inspiration from the entire pantheon of divine beings, spiritual cultivators, and heavenly themes that have enriched Chinese history and thought.

“What I found interesting was with the characters that were played, how the dancers used their body to portray their characters was incredible—whether it was an older person and their posture walking with the walking sticks and whether it was the troublemakers or the people that were there to create chaos,” Mr. Pieters said.

The tension in the stories between the troublemakers and peacemakers was communicated very clearly, he added.

And “not once they missed the timing, not once they missed the placement. And we were wondering, ‘Do they have markers to do that, or do they just practice really well?’ That’s another attention to detail, where not only do the dancers have to remember the choreography, they also have to remember the placement with such a technical routine.”

He said he and his wife were looking forward to bringing their young children to see New York-based Shen Yun when they’re older.

“We would absolutely recommend it,” he said.
