NICE, France—After watching Shen Yun Performing Arts Sophia Maillard was left pondering on her life.
She was particularly touched by the messages conveyed in Shen Yun.
“It features love, compassion, freedom ... freedom of thought too—all extraordinary,” she said after watching Shen Yun at Nice’s Acropolis, on April 9
After the performance, Ms. Maillard said she had a question in her mind: “Are we able to become the person we should become?”
We need “to be in harmony and to be coherent,” said Ms. Maillard who is an image consultant, coach, trainer, and founder of the agency Optimum Image.
Ms. Maillard says she has always felt connected to the values of compassion, and unconditional love.
“And wisdom—that of course speaks to me as well. But I did not expect those values but these messages in Shen Yun come across very, very well,” she said.
The New York-based classical Chinese dance company’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and share it with the world through the universal languages of music and dance.
Shen Yun on its website says: “China was called ‘Land of the Divine’ and everyone, from the humblest peasant to the prestigious emperor, paced their daily lives according to rituals linking them to the divine.”
For Ms. Maillard, watching Shen Yun was about discovering 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture for the first time.
“I am delighted, delighted to be here! It’s even more beautiful than I thought, it’s spectacular, it’s breathtaking,” she said. “You really get stars in your eyes!”
“I found it magical on many levels, whether it is in relation to the costumes or the bright, intense colors”
The solo pieces also stood out for Ms. Maillard—the tenor, the pianist, the virtuoso, and of course, the orchestra. She said their performances were full of emotion and positive energy.
Ms. Maillard summed up her description of Shen Yun in a few words.
“It is very, very special, spectacular. It’s breathtaking, it’s great.”
