NEW YORK CITY—Nirmal Nigwekar felt the dancers and choreographers of Shen Yun Performing Arts had “achieved perfection” in their craft, marveling at the movement and even use of gravity and air in what the audience could see.

“The overall choreography is fantastic. I mean, there seems to be a lot of effort that has gone through,” said Mr. Nigwekar, a bank auditor, describing the rotation of certain spins and how each dancer executed synchronized movements exactly the same. He attended Shen Yun at Lincoln Center on March 28.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, known for revitalizing the ancient art form.

One of the most comprehensive dance forms in the world, classical Chinese dance requires not just mastery of dance fundamentals and its unique postures and movements, but also tumbling techniques like the spins that impressed Mr. Nigwekar, and flips and leaps from which sports like gymnastics and acrobatics were inspired.

Mr. Nigwekar said Shen Yun was a “fantastic combination of art and science.”

“I mean, they defy the science. They defy the physics in certain stages, certain steps. So, it’s a great combination to see. I mean, especially in the dance form,” he said.
Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

Mr. Nigwekar said what touched him the most was the inclusion of a story that was set in the current day, which showed Chinese people who hold onto tradition and faith despite persecution by the Chinese communist regime, based on true events.

“That touched me the most, because I felt like they try to show, they didn’t hide the emotions of current China,” he said. “That’s what I appreciate the most.”

He felt Shen Yun’s focus on the courage and faith of people, rather than merely the brutality of the regime, made the story meaningful.
“They presented it in such a fashion that it has definitely a positive spin to it,“ he said. ”That touched my heart. Gave me tears.”

“There is persistence. I mean, there is a lot of hard work,” he said. “But here they are presenting in such a fashion that ... the words have not been used, but the dance actually gives you that feeling, what they want to say really from inside. So I think that’s something that you need to take away from this.”
