DALLAS—Watching Shen Yun Performing Arts is a family tradition for Michael Winter, who returns to see the company’s all-new production each year. This year, his wife stayed home, as the Winters had just welcomed their newborn child, and Mr. Winter took his wife’s parents to experience Shen Yun.
“The experience is phenomenal,” said Mr. Winter, a project manager for a bank, after seeing the performance at Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas, on Jan. 26.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. Winter is well-traveled and familiar with many Asian cultures, and said the spirituality of traditional Chinese culture—a divinely inspired culture—was one he was familiar with and appreciated, and he loved learning more about it through Shen Yun.
“I love learning about the divinity aspect of it and the stories that brought us to this point,” he said. “They [China] have a very rich culture, and that they have a lot of stories ... that have brought them to the modern day.”
Mr. Winter said that a Shen Yun production was a combination of many factors, which added up to something that couldn’t be found elsewhere.
He said he enjoyed the ethnic and folk dances that are always included in a Shen Yun program, each year showcasing the culture and traditions of China’s 50-some ethnic minorities. He pointed out that Shen Yun’s special backdrop allows the artists to seemingly move from stage to screen with seamless coordination, adding another fun touch to the production.
“That’s something unique to Shen Yun,” he added. “It’s something that Shen Yun does that nobody else, I think, really does.”
“The dances themselves, because they’re so elaborate ... also the stories that they tell in such a way and say it with dance and present it that way is just really fun. That stuff goes to my heart because it’s not just telling you ... it’s showing it through dancing,” he said.
