Shen Yun Artists Have ‘Perfected their craft’

LOS ANGELES—Music and film producer Quincy Jones III had a wonderful time at Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE on Saturday evening, March 22.

“I think it’s great,” said Mr. Jones III. “It’s so precise. The colors are very stunning. They just jump out at you. It’s amazing.”

Quincy Jones III has produced many gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums and singles and was awarded the ASCAP Composers’ Award for his work on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He founded QD3 Entertainment Inc in 2001 and produces film, television, music, web, and mobile content and gaming.

He is the son of the legendary musician, producer and philanthropist Quincy Jones Jr..

Non-profit and based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is bringing back the true, divinely inspired culture of China that was almost lost, through stunning music and dance performances around the world.

The program focuses on classical Chinese dance, which is accompanied by a live, full orchestra with both traditional Chinese and Western instruments and includes folk dances, musical soloists, elegant costumes, and a colorful digital backdrop with majestic Chinese landscapes.

“I like the colors,” said Mr. Jones III. “It’s my personal favorite. It’s like a different array of colors than you’re used to seeing here, and they’re very bright and vivid. I love it.”

Mr. Jones III also liked the digital backdrop, which interacts with the performers on stage, allowing them to appear to jump in or out of the background.

“I like the backdrop, too, with the screen, how things come from the screen onto the stage and go back into the screen again. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

Mr. Jones III thought the dancers were very graceful and amazing to watch, and he said he was getting new musical ideas from listening to the orchestration.

He wanted to congratulate the performers on a job well done.

“Congratulations on an amazing job! They’ve really perfected their craft. It’s really impressive.”

Mr. Jones III recommended that people who haven’t seen Shen Yun should come and check it out.

“It’s very original and unique … I would describe it as a visually stunning music and dance performance. It’s eye candy, ear candy, the whole line.”

Another member of the audience on Saturday evening was Richard Taylor, co-creative director at yU+co, a production and design company. Mr. Taylor has considerable experience and won several awards in live action direction, production design, special effects, and computer generated images for theatrical films, television commercials, and computer games.

Mr. Taylor was very impressed with Shen Yun’s dancers.

“They’re fantastic athletes, the costuming is beautiful … it’s really interesting to see the combination of dance moves that they use … they’re extremely agile athletes. I mean they’re so light-footed, you can’t even really hear their feet when they land.”

Like Mr. Jones III, Mr. Taylor was fascinated by the vibrant color palette used in the performance, which was somewhat different than what he was used to seeing.

Mr. Taylor also loved the music.

“The music is beautifully done,” he said. “It’s great that it’s live and that it’s a live orchestra playing those classical instruments, and some of their traditional instruments as well. The music is beautiful.”

Overall, Mr. Taylor enjoyed the entire performance.

“All in all it’s very beautiful and very educational,” he said.
