Fort Lauderdale, Florida will host Shen Yun Performing Arts as they present the revival of traditional Chinese culture from Jan. 3 through Jan. 5. Shen Yun will present an all-new production once again at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts—Au-Rene Theatre.
Since its inception in 2006, the New York-based performing arts company has inspired audiences the world over, and Fort Lauderdale is no exception.
Over the past decades, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has treated spirituality and traditional culture as a threat to its rule. Through campaigns like the Cultural Revolution, it has systematically uprooted traditional beliefs, bringing the age-old culture to the brink of extinction.
Many who attended Shen Yun last year noted the performance highlighted China before communism.
“We see not only the history, but also it brings you China today,” said Nannette Amezaga. “Even though you might find difficult times, you always have that open space to choose the best.”
She said she was touched to see “how it motivates the young people to connect to their cultural and their spiritual beliefs and to be better [people] every day,” she added.
Stanley Miller agreed. In a scene where the Creator rewards kindness with salvation, he said, “I think that it’s beautiful and that it’s true. If we have kindness in our hearts, we will get to where we want to be in terms of happiness, in terms of fulfillment.”
“I think that the show really conveys that,” he said.
Lauren Shapiro thought the artists did a great job of adhering to their mission of bringing traditional Chinese culture to the world.
“I think tradition is how we understand the future as well as the past. The show presented [these values] in a contemporary way that keeps them alive,” she said. “This is very important to the heart of their story.”
This year, Shen Yun is set to perform in over 200 cities around the world and across five continents, the 2025 touring season is shaping up to be the artists’ busiest yet and a glorious treat for theatergoers.
