EUGENE, Ore.—Joy Efseaff, a real estate appraiser, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Hult Center on Jan. 26.

“They were phenomenal,” Ms. Efseaff said. “I’ve never seen dancing like that. They were outstanding.”

Ms. Efseaff also said she could see “a very hopeful message for the future” in Shen Yun and “a belief that the injustices of the world will be set right.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and remind audiences of the beauty of “China before communism.”

Founded on the ancient teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, traditional Chinese culture contains many spiritual elements. Shen Yun showcases these elements in multiple ways, including depicting divine beings following the Creator down to Earth to establish civilization. Ms. Efseaff said that she could resonate with what she saw.

“It was very moving,” she said. “I think many people are waiting for redemption ... because there’s so much that’s wrong in the world. It resonates very much.”

Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which combines traditional Chinese and Western instruments, impressed Ms. Efseaff, too.

“It was very nice. I enjoyed it ... It was very imaginative music. I felt it supported the dancing very well. It was extremely well-timed.”

A solo on the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese instrument, stood out to Ms. Efseaff.
“That was beautiful,” she said. “That was so good. It takes so much concentration and skill, and practice to be up on stage and perform like that in front of people and bring out the feeling of the instrument.

“It’s worth seeing,” she said.
