Two years ago, a Texas family returned home to a surprising sight: an unknown black cat, who'd snuck into the house, slumbering peacefully on their couch.
“I didn’t believe I was seeing what I was seeing,” Donna Muñoz, a college professor, told The Epoch Times. “This cat was sound asleep as if he had been with us his whole life—as if he were in his home.”
Suspecting the cat had made his way into their house through the doggy door, Mrs. Muñoz and her husband found it perplexing that their three dogs hadn’t shown any aggression toward the strange cat; they were found, still sleeping, in their favorite spots around the house.
“I guess this little guy came right in and made friends with them and then made himself right at home,” the 45-year-old mom said. “I was so touched that he felt like he was safe.”
The family left no stone unturned in seeking to identify the cat’s owner. From taking the cat to a vet to check for a microchip to quizzing their neighbors, their efforts were fruitless until one friendly neighbor identified him as a stray.
Upon hearing this, the couple decided to name the cat Jack and welcome him into their home permanently.
“He was welcomed immediately, but we let him come and go as he pleased,” Mrs. Muñoz said.
At first, Jack visited the family every day.
“Eventually, when he‘d come inside, he’d stay longer until he decided this was where he’d make his home,” Mrs. Muñoz said.
Gradually, he also formed a merry band with the family’s other animals: their border collie, Frankie; Great Dane, Harper; and German shepherd, Riley.
“He gets along well with our dogs,” Mrs. Muñoz said. “Frankie is his favorite; they actually cuddle and sleep together and go for walks together.
“Harper mostly ignores him, but Riley is obsessed with him.”
Describing Jack as “your everyday cat,” Mrs. Muñoz said he enthusiastically accepts love and cuddles when he feels like it, “and when he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”
The cat also enjoys clinging to his blue toy fish and sleeps next to Mrs. Muñoz each night.
Life is blissfully happy for Jack at the home he chose for himself.
