U2 will be rescheduling its multimillion dollar North American tour, following Bono’s recent trip to a German hospital for a back injury that required surgery.
A press statement confirmed bad news for U2 fans across the nation after Live Nation announced the official cancellation of the remainder of the U2 360 Degrees North American Tour. Bono was released from Ludwig Maximilians-University (LMU) Hospital in Munich after a successful back surgery.
“Although we understand the disappointment to U2 fans, first and foremost comes the recovery of Bono,” said Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring, on the U2 official website.
Bono will begin eight weeks of physical rehabilitation procedures ordered by his doctor to guarantee a complete recovery from the injury. The U2 360 Degrees Tour will be canceling 16 shows that were to be held in Utah, New Jersey and many places in between.
“Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve. On review of his MRI scan, I realized there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice. I recommended Bono have emergency spine surgery with Professor Tonn at Munich’s LMU University Hospital on Friday,” said Dr. Muller Wohlfahrt, also team doctor for the FC Bayern München Soccer club, in a statement.
The cancelled shows will be rescheduled for the summer of 2011. The U2 shows were to be held primarily outdoors, with massive props and pyrotechnics, and a unique, giant 360 degree stage nicknamed “The Claw.”
“We are treating Bono as we would treat any of our athletes, and while the surgery has gone very well, the coming weeks are crucial for a return to full health. In the next days, he will start a light rehabilitation program, with increasing intensity over the next 8 weeks. In our experience, this is the minimum time,” said Dr. Wohlfahrt.
