A 10-year-old from Philadelphia is attracting attention after buying a school bus for an enterprising purpose: He plans to convert it into a food truck.
Young Micah Harrigan started selling fresh-squeezed lemonade at the age of 8, first setting up shop on the sidewalk, then stocking his lemonade and iced tea in corner stores around the city.
So instead, he tried plastic cups with lids. The first day he tried this new packaging approach at his sidewalk stand, he sold out of drinks. Sales snowballed over the summer of 2020, and the young man’s business took off.
Now, after “Micah’s Mixx” began booming, during the pandemic no less, the 5th-grader has now decided to take his business to the next level with his new bus.
“I sold over 1,500 bottles of lemonade and tea,” Micah wrote on his GoFundMe page, dedicated to growing his business. “With the money I finally reached goal #1. I bought a minibus!!”
He bought the bus from a private school for $4,000, Black Business reports. Micah plans to convert it into a food truck, and he is currently raising funds to install counters and refrigeration, which will cost about another $10,000.
“I’m asking for your help once again,” Micah wrote on the page. “I’ll use this truck to be able to travel all over to sell my lemonade.”
Once he finishes the food truck, Micah also hopes to supply free drinks to the homeless around Philadelphia.
So far, he has raised over $8,000, over 80 percent of his goal.
“Please help me reach my dreams of becoming Philly’s young lemonade king and a great entrepreneur,” Micah wrote. “Thank you!”
The 10-year-old proprietor has big dreams for his business and seems to have the perfect instincts for entrepreneurship.
“My lemonades and teas come in over a dozen different flavors,” Micah said on his crowdfunding page.
“Now I start the hard work of raising enough funds to actually make it a food truck,” he posted on Instagram on Jan. 14.
“My mom was hesitant to do this but we really underestimated the cost it takes to turn a bus into a food truck… Thanks for getting me this far I couldn’t have done this without my followers!”
