Upon first glance it’s easy to see why Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most highly regarded historical monuments in Normandie and around the world. Not only is the architecture of this island commune gorgeous, but also its location on France’s northwestern coast is just as equally enchanting if not more so.

While known for its beauty, Mont Saint-Michel is also a symbol for strength. The rising tide made the monastery treacherous, leaving invaders stranded or drowned. Capitalizing on this natural defense, the Mont remained unconquered throughout the Hundred Years’ War between the French and the English.

Walking through the village one can’t help but feel as if the clock has been wound back a few centuries. The stone itself is full of character and touching it for even a second sends electrifying excitement through your body. If only the walls could talk. There’s also a calming tranquility that occupies the air and you only wish you could take the feeling home.

If you ever found yourself in the north of France, it would behoove you to visit this magnificent site. The island now provides visitors with museums, shops, restaurants, and even hotels while maintaining its historical integrity and majestic aesthetic.

Fondly referred to as the ‘Wonder of the West’, Mont Saint-Michel embodies the spirit of Normandie and is worthy of any explorers travelogue. This is the stuff dreams are made of.
