NORTHAMPTON, UK—Paul and Mylissa Joyce, the mayor and mayoress of Northampton, saw Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time on Feb. 17 at the Royal & Derngate, welcoming the performing arts group to their city and extending an invitation for future seasons.

“I’m being absolutely blown away by it! It’s been a mesmerizing, magical hour,” Mr. Joyce said at intermission. “Some things really struck home to me tonight, but I’ve been absolutely blown away by this. I’m really looking forward to the second half.”

“I'd say we want to see more of these shows across the country. Come back to Northampton; we want five more nights to this actually!” he said. “The more nights, more shows across the country, across the world, just will show everybody what is going on, obviously, and I see that connection to the divine and the human, absolutely!”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, now on one of its largest world tours yet, with eight companies simultaneously performing around the world. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, sharing with audiences the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. Joyce said the performance had been amazing, with visuals and stagecraft that approached magic—such as the use of a backdrop that allowed dancers to appear on stage one moment and seemingly fly into the heavens the next.

“That has blown me away! I mean, magical effects,” Mr. Joyce said.

“It’s so magical,” he said. “Something I’ve never seen before, and it’s resonated with [me], I shall never forget this day. It’s really resonated with me.”

He described the performance as an emotional journey as well as stunning.

“The music uplifts you, you know. It makes you feel positive, and it brings ... that range of emotions to you,” he said.

Besides Shen Yun’s orchestra, which blends East and West, the production’s unique musical offerings also included solo bel canto virtuosos who sang original songs in the Chinese language.

“The singer, wow! That brought tears to my eyes actually, you know,” Mr. Joyce said. The lyrics, written by Shen Yun’s artistic director, included profound themes touching on the meaning of life and humanity’s connection to the divine.

Mr. Joyce felt this spirituality, a core element to traditional Chinese culture, showed a connection between humankind and the heavens that is universal and something everyone could connect with.

“What a beautiful song!” he said. “It’s been inspiring.”

The performance also brought Mrs. Joyce a lot of joy.

“I had a smile on my face the whole time of watching it,” she said. “Absolutely loved it! So colorful! It’s just amazing. I really loved it.”

“It moved me,” she said. “Lots of energy, lots of passion. You can definitely see that and feel that when you’re watching it.”

She expressed her admiration for the artists.

“They’re amazing! ... I would imagine so much training has gone into that and so much passion,” she said. “It’s just outstanding, outstanding!

The Joyces said they were going to recommend the performance to friends and family and were already planning on seeing it again the next time Shen Yun was in town.

“You’ve got to see it. I’m going to tell my daughters, they’re going to love it. I think it’s all sold out though this year, so we'll have to come back next year. But I’m going to tell everybody to go and see it because it’s amazing,” Mrs. Joyce said.

“We’re coming back next year. We’re going to book tickets up and we’re going to be right there in the front row,” Mr. Joyce said.
