NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Classical Chinese dance and ballet are both dance forms with long histories behind them, but classical Chinese dance has only become popular in recent years due to Shen Yun Performing Arts.
“It’s very similar to ballet in a lot of ways, but obviously there’s very different things that have been developed over thousands of years. So it’s really cool to see such a unique style of dance and I’ve really been enjoying it so far,” said Camille Curtin, a ballet dancer and choreographer.
Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It’s amazing how quietly they do everything, just because I know how difficult it is being a dancer to land softly on the ground. And they are just so excellent,” Ms. Curtin said.

Classical Chinese dance requires its artists to master bearing, form, technique, and tumbling techniques in order to become proficient. Ms. Curtin shared her admiration of Shen Yun’s dancers.

“They have such control, and so it’s really amazing to watch them. I can tell that they’ve just dedicated their whole lives to this art, and so it’s very beautiful,” she said.

As a choreographer, seeing Shen Yun’s various dances was inspiring to Ms. Curtin.

“Water Sleeves—it’s giving me ideas as a choreographer. I think it’s really, it’s such a beautiful way to use a prop or a costume in a way that really just adds so much beauty to the movement and extends the lines,” Ms. Curtin remarked.

Seeing the stage production, Ms. Curtin also remarked on the colors. Many audience members shared how Shen Yun’s costumes use colors in a unique and complementary way.

“Colors are spectacular. They are just using every color in the rainbow. The stage is just so lit up, and the smiles are so beautiful. Every single person on stage that you look at, you could watch them the whole time,” she said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“It’s kind of fun seeing the scenes in the back and seeing them jump off and jump back in,” Ms. Curtin said.
