NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Art critic Karen Sulcan came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 8 and was pleased to share that she loved it.

“I go to shows all the time, and I really don’t love most of them, so it’s hard to review many of them because I don’t like them. This one I love. This is easy to review. I can write the review. I love it—superior dancers, great show, beautiful costumes—everything,” Ms. Sulcan said.

Ms. Sulcan came to the performance with Marc Edward Winer, a business owner.

“I’m a very hyper person, and the show is very calming to me, because it’s so beautiful, and just music is so relaxing ... I’m enjoying the peace and the art,” Mr. Winer said.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. The company’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, or “China before communism.”

“It’s just gorgeous. Best dancers, superb dancers. It’s as gorgeous as ever. It’s beautiful, it’s perfect. I love that each one is short, each little piece is short, so we get it, we know what’s going on. I wish I was one of those dancers because I wish I could dance like that,” Ms. Sulcan said.

The costumes seen in Shen Yun are all expertly tailor-made and designed to match the fashion worn throughout the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“I love the dancing and I especially love the costumes,” Mr. Winer said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“I love all of the exciting imagery on the screen, where they have the animation, and then the actors and the dancers come off of this. They come from the screen as animated, then they come dancing on the stage right away. That was really clever and fun,” Mr. Winer said.

Ms. Sulcan echoed him, saying, “The animated screens—I love the backdrops even when they’re not animated.”

As an art critic, Ms. Sulcan shared something that audience members would be interested in knowing.

“No matter where you’re sitting, it’s going to look beautiful. You don’t have to sit up close for this one. I’m sure you can sit in the balcony and it would be just as beautiful,” Ms. Sulcan said.

Ms. Sulcan had seen the performance a decade ago, so she is aware of the ongoing atrocities in present-day China, including religious persecution.

“I knew some of it before because I had reviewed [Shen Yun] 10 years ago. It breaks my heart that China goes through what we’re going through here now in America, so it’s just that part breaks my heart,” she said.
