MONTREAL—Shen Yun Performing Arts is touring around the world and Montreal is among the nine cities that Shen Yun is visiting in Canada this season.

“It was marvelous. Very wonderful. Really, really wonderful. I have always liked Chinese history and tradition and culture. So this is getting me close to that culture. So wonderful. Amazing,” said Ismael Castillo, a computer scientist.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“Cultural spectacles like this help bring people together, and they make the dark times a bit lighter. So please continue doing what you do,” Mr. Castillo said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“They are incredible and seeing the dancers do what I can’t do as a human do, honestly, the movements, the techniques are so impressive,” Mr. Castillo praised.

Shen Yun’s live orchestra is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“I’m not very specialized into music, but it sounds wonderful. Like very compelling music,” Mr. Castillo said.

Shen Yun’s singers are trained in bel canto technique, and the digital backdrop provides a translation of the Chinese text being sung.

“The vocalists were incredible. I couldn’t believe it. It’s really, really impressive ... Since they sang in Chinese, I had the translation in front of me. I thought that it was beautiful, the text,” Mr. Castillo said.

Many of Shen Yun’s songs feature text describing the importance of staying close to the divine and keeping one’s morals upright.

“It sounded beautiful and inspiring. There was a sense of finding peace in yourself and peace in the world. Especially in our current world,” Mr. Castillo said.

He really enjoyed hearing the voices of Shen Yun’s singers saying, “Please continue singing like that because we need things so beautiful in the world.”

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.

“The way they manage the scenery, the landscapes, and the mountains—that kind of approach to nature really gives me a feeling of adventure,” Mr. Castillo said.
