BOSTON—Retired company vice president Scott Delport was recommended to Shen Yun Performing Arts by a friend who believed he would appreciate the show.

After attending the company’s evening show at the Boch Center Wang Theatre on April 3, Mr. Delport found that the recommendation was indeed spot-on.

“I like it very much. I’m very interested in the spiritual aspect of it, which very much aligns with my Christian faith,” he said. “It was very interesting to my wife. It resonates everywhere.”

The New York-based Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by elite Chinese artists who had fled the persecution of the communist party.

For millennia, China’s civilization flourished under the shared belief that the divine will bless those who uphold traditional moral values. Tragically, within just a few decades of the communist party’s violent takeover, these beliefs were erased and replaced with atheism.
The mission of Shen Yun artists is to return to the world’s stage—the glory and beauty of China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

Mr. Delport loved the artists’ depiction of divine beings and spirits descending to Earth to help the people in need in times of trouble.

Shen Yun “talked about [divine beings] coming from heaven, spirits [going] to heaven, and how in the last days they would come back,” he expressed. “It’s a universal value. We were divine.”

The performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists recount tales from ancient times to the modern day.

A devout Christian, Mr. Delport was amazed by the similarities in spiritual beliefs and values across different cultures.

“What was interesting is that it’s universal because one spiritual idea came from one part of the world, and this came from another part of the world. We were talking about how in South America there are other traditions, and how similar they are,” he stated.

Maybe the creators from different cultures “are one and we just see it from a different side of the mountain. ... Different names but the same ideas.”

Reflecting on the artists’ mission to revive traditional culture and shed light on the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of people of faith, Mr. Delport shared that, as a longtime subscriber to The Epoch Times, he is well aware of the hardships and human rights issues in China.

He could feel the truth, compassion, and energy emanate from the performers on stage.

If given the chance to speak with Shen Yun artists, Mr. Delport would like to tell them: “Thank you very much for your sacrifices and for what you’ve done to share it with other people.”
