NEW YORK CITY—Sherwood Salvan attended Shen Yun Performing Arts on April 2 at Lincoln Center to celebrate a life.

“My mother was born on April 2nd a long time ago, maybe over 100 years ago,” Mr. Salvan, an attorney, said. “If she'd seen it, she would love it.”

Mr. Salvan said when he was introduced to Shen Yun earlier this year, the date caught his eye, and convinced him to see it. Sitting in the audience Wednesday afternoon, he said he loved it.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company. Through music and dance, Shen Yun’s mission is to show audiences the beauty of China before communism.

“Everything’s wonderful, the dance, the performance ... just being here is beautiful,” Mr. Salvan said. “Celebrating my mother’s life is a wonderful thing to do and this is a wonderful event to do it in ... I’m so glad I did this.”

Also partaking in the performance for the first time on April 2 was Rita Ewing, the owner of a spa.

“It’s been amazing,” Ms. Ewing said, who described the experience as “an escape” and a catharsis.

“It’s enlightening. It’s really nice. It’s uplifting. It’s really beautiful,” she said.

“I think it’s just, especially today, in today’s climate, what’s going on in the world—to come and see the history that’s being presented, and the artistic way it’s being shown, it’s just, it’s an escape for me mentally,“ Ms. Ewing said. ”It’s like you just are traveling and you feel like you’re part of it, and it’s a really nice cathartic journey being here watching it.”

Ms. Ewing said the artists had been able to convey something vast and deep through their talents.

“The performers, I think they’re doing an amazing job showing history, when things were so very different and free. And I feel that through their artistic talents,” she said.
