DAEGU, South Korea—The 2024 season of Shen Yun Performing Arts concluded in Korea after the New York company completed its three performances in two days in Daegu.
Shin-ja Moon, chairman of the Hallyu Cultural Renaissance Foundation, was highly impressed with the way Shen Yun’s dances echoed a Korean proverb.
“There’s a Korean proverb that says: ‘If you make others cry, your own eyes will bleed.’ So, if you mistreat others, you will be punished; if you do good to others, you will be blessed,” said Ms. Moon.
“The most surprising aspect of this performance was the integration between the dancers and the backdrop. How are they merging the visuals with the dance? It was truly astonishing. No matter where in the world, this performance will receive praise and applause,” she said.
She also expressed her wish for people all around the world, including those in China, to see Shen Yun.
“Chinese people must also want to see Shen Yun. I look forward to and wish for performances in China in the future ... If you don’t go see Shen Yun, you will regret it for the rest of your life,” said Ms. Moon.
Mr. Lee shared his respect for Shen Yun’s honesty portrayed in current events in China. He acknowledged that telling the truth can make one a target.
“Wanting to speak out for the truth but being engulfed by darkness is a very regrettable reality. I hope these facts can be truthfully understood by the outside world once again,” said Mr. Lee.
The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has repeatedly broken promises and violated human rights. Due to Shen Yun raising awareness of the CCP’s evil actions, it is unable to perform in China.
“I think this is a regrettable reality. The place that should have been the first to see [Shen Yun] cannot see it. This is heartbreaking. I hope this issue can be resolved as soon as possible,” said Mr. Lee.
“I felt a sense of justice in pursuing tradition. Tradition and justice. I hope this set of values can be shared with the world,” shared Mr. Lee.
Orchestra director Sook-young Park experienced Shen Yun on May 10. She expressed her love for Shen Yun’s music.
One particular instrument had its moment under the spotlight. The Chinese erhu is a two-stringed instrument that is known for its hauntingly beautiful sound.
“The erhu instrument is similar to our Korean haegum. Originally, I thought it was impossible to combine the erhu with the piano, but Shen Yun did such a good job of pairing these two instruments,” said Ms. Park.
Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture, and Ms. Park was inspired by the performance to see Korean culture come alive again.
“China’s history is great. I think we should learn from the spirit of Shen Yun—reclaim our own unique culture. In Korean tradition, there are also many beautiful things,” she said.
