DALLAS—Jordi Cairo, senior network design engineer for global communications at Citibank, and his wife Helen Li, who owns a company in China, were in attendance for Shen Yun Performing Arts at Dallas’ Winspear Opera House on Jan. 4.

“I think it is fantastic. It was very beautiful,” Mr. Cairo said.

With his wife visiting from China, he made it a priority for her to see the performance. “We were here last year, but she wasn’t here last time,” he said. “So this year I wanted to make sure to take her.”

“I like its performance of the Chinese culture and tradition very much,” Mrs. Li said. She added that she has been back in the States for only 6 months, while she has been running a business in China for 10 years.

“I just told my husband that I especially love its music, costumes, and the backdrop,” she said. “I love everything, including the stories presented by the performances.”

For all her years in China, Mrs. Li would have been unable to see any performance even remotely resembling a Shen Yun performance. For 60 years, the communist regime in China has tried desperately to destroy the 5,000-year heritage of the Middle Kingdom.

Most notably through a campaign known as the Cultural Revolution, “Ancient relics and antiques, calligraphy and paintings, classic books and scriptures were burned. Temples and statues were smashed to dust,” reads Shen Yun’s website. “Millions of lives were lost.”

Today, Shen Yun is resurrecting this treasure of mankind through the arts.

Mr. Cairo was excited for Shen Yun’s mission, and although not Chinese himself, he is very proud of his wife’s true cultural heritage. “Oh yes, absolutely, very much,” he said, referring to his feeling of pride.

With the remaining half the show still ahead, Mr. Cairo was excited to get back to it. “I wanted to see some more of that dancing,” he said.

Mrs. Li added that she was just as excited for the music. “And I also like their instruments,” she said.
