LAS VEGAS—Richard Bruno is the president of a restaurant supply company. He came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and he was pleased to see the artistry and talent of the artists.

“The show is wonderful. It was very dynamic, and the costumes are just so colorful, and, of course, the performers are amazing. So it was very inspiring,” Mr. Bruno said.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“It’s amazing. My wife and I do ballroom dancing so we very much appreciate the artistry and the technique. It’s almost like gravity doesn’t exist the way they get into the air,” he said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of the technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, and it gives the stage endless possibilities.

“The integration where they would come in and come out of the scenes ... that was very unexpected and very interesting,” he said.

Shen Yun’s live orchestra is a unique combination of traditional Chinese instruments and a classic Western ensemble.

“The other thing that was very cool is the orchestra and when they were introduced and how playful they were. The live orchestra is just very fascinating. They were great. We felt really close to them and we enjoyed it immensely,” Mr. Bruno said.

While looking through the program book, Mr. Bruno noticed that some of Shen Yun’s artists have experienced firsthand the persecution from the Chinese Communist Party.

“I was reading a little bit about them in the program about the background of some of the artists and I saw there was in particular one young man that had gone through so many trials and tribulations with their family. I mean how can you not be extremely impressed and amazed at that young person’s life,” he said.

In a society where the younger generation is struggling with mental health, Mr. Bruno was moved to see a group of young artists who are dedicated to what they do.

“It gives a person like me faith in the younger generations. They’re so strong, so creative, and so talented and skilled, and obviously very dedicated to what they do. So yes, overall, it’s extremely inspiring,” Mr. Bruno said.
