McALLEN, Texas—Ray Miller, a retired investor, and Shawna Miller, a retired cartographer, watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the McAllen Performing Arts Center on March 2.

“We loved the show,” Mr. Miller said. “It was the first time we’ve ever seen anything like this.”

“I learned a lot,” Mrs. Miller said. “They’re magnificent.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 and is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception, Shen Yun has expanded from one to eight equally sized companies that tour around the world simultaneously, reviving traditional Chinese culture and showcasing the beauty of “China before communism.”

“I think it’s fabulous,” Mrs. Miller said. “It’s lovely to learn about Chinese traditions because we don’t know [about them]. You hear all these things in North America about the issues with Chinese communism, but that’s not the Chinese people.”
Shen Yun’s performance depicts the spiritual elements of traditional Chinese culture, which is rooted in the teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

“You can see the heavenly presentation,” Mr. Miller said. “You can see the divinity.”

In addition to dance vignettes, Shen Yun’s program also includes story-based dances, some of which depict the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of followers of faith.

“We are not being told the truth about a lot of things, so it’s nice to see the truth because it just resonates as being true and honest and real,” Mrs. Miller said.

“Shen Yun is ... eye-opening,” Mr. Miller added. “We need these kinds of things.”
