SAN FRANCISCO—From the moment the curtain went up on Shen Yun Performing Arts’ last of its ten-show run in San Francisco, Mr. Billy Moore was “awestruck by the whole thing.”
“I was moved emotionally,” Mr. Moore said at the War Memorial Opera House, Jan. 12. “I had the feeling at that time that the depthness of humanity itself, our humanness was captured in this performance.”
Mr. Moore is the owner of a construction company as well as a small production company, and is also a musician and martial artist himself. Being a lover of the performing arts and involved in productions himself, New York-based Shen Yun had blown him away.
“I am almost lost for words in terms of how extraordinary and how much work goes into this kind of production,” Mr. Moore said. “I thought that the production and the artistry of the dance was phenomenal.”
Established in 2006, Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the universal languages of music and dance.
“It was so fascinating to me to see that; it makes me want to learn more about the Chinese culture,” Mr. Moore said.
Beyond being an artistic wonder, Shen Yun had been a moving experience for Mr. Moore from the very opening, which told the legend of the Creator coming down from the heavens to impart the traditional Chinese culture.
“I almost went to tears watching in a couple of ways, a couple of times,” Mr. Moore said.
Learning about the traditional Chinese culture, Mr. Moore realized so many values he saw were universal, and “that’s what I thought was just phenomenal.”
“I felt like it captured our humanness,” Mr. Moore said. “The Chinese history is so vast and so old. It’s like everything else.”
As a singer, Mr. Moore was particularly impacted by Shen Yun’s bel canto solo vocalists. The vocalists sing original Chinese compositions, with translated lyrics projected onto the digital backdrop.
“It is so deep,” Mr. Moore said of the songs. “Those are the things I thought were fantastic about the depth of this show. That’s what I really like.”
“That to me is a gift. This is really a gift,” Mr. Moore said.
