PITTSBURGH—County councilman Bob Macey watched Shen Yun Performing Arts’ matinee performance at The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts on April 26. It was Mr. Macey’s second time seeing Shen Yun.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. China was once a country that flourished in art, culture, and spirituality, yet many of those elements were destroyed or abolished when the atheist Chinese Communist Party seized power in 1949.
Many of Shen Yun’s founders and performers experienced oppression and even persecution for their beliefs in China, and were forced to flee their homeland. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and showcase the beauty of “China before communism.”
“I think it’s something that people need to understand, that just because we live in America, a free country, that not every place in this world is free,” Mr. Macey said. “We need to share our experiences, our strengths, and our hopes for other people in this nation as well as this world.”Due to Shen Yun’s depiction of the persecution happening in China, Shen Yun is not allowed to perform in China. Mr. Macey said he believes that Shen Yun “should be experienced by everybody.”
“It’s colorful, it is very inspirational, and the talent just goes on and on,” he said. “It’s unbelievable how in sync the whole performance was, and I recommend it for everybody.”
