Kyoto, Japan will host an all-new production of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the ROHM Theatre Kyoto for several performances. Shen Yun performances run from Dec. 30 through January 5.

The New York-based performing arts company has become popular the world over since its inception in 2006, and has especially delighted theater goers in Japan. Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, known for reviving the 5,000-year-old art form.

The capital city of Kyoto prefecture on the island of Honshu is an ancient city that values traditional culture. Last year’s Kyoto audience appreciated Shen Yun on all levels.

Akira Sakagami, a prominent Kenshibu dancer in Japan, said, “In terms of flexibility, jumping and tumbling, etc., it was obvious that the dancers had practiced attentively and worked very hard.”
Shen Yun is based in New York, and its dancers are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.

“The silent teamwork of the dancers greatly added to the beauty of the dance and the overall performance,” Mr. Sakagami said.

With the beauty of the dance, singing, and music, Shen Yun offered comfort and hope to last year’s Kyoto audience.

“Seeing Shen Yun, I felt that I could see hope and light in the darkness and helplessness. This is very important for human beings today,” Hiroshi Yano said.

“It’s really important for us to see such a performance and gain energy from it now,” he added.

A dance that struck Taniguti Tamio portrayed divine beings rescuing good people during their time of need. This scene reminded him of last year’s disasters in Japan.

He agreed with the traditional belief that good people are protected by the heavens, saying, “I felt very pleasant after seeing the performance. I was immersed in happiness ... I feel very lucky that I can live here safely.”

After the performance, Mr. Tamio shared that he looked forward to seeing Shen Yun again.

“Although today is only the third day of the New Year, I am ready to see Shen Yun again in the new year of 2025,” he said.

Shen Yun also uses dance and music to tell the true story of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted for their faith in present-day China. Falun Gong’s followers believe in leading their lives according to the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.

“In today’s society, truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance are very important!” said Mami Kubota, a psychologist, after seeing Shen Yun. She said she felt a very warm and clear energy from the performance.
