BUSAN, South Korea—A sinology professor at Pusan National University said he understood something very profound from watching Shen Yun Performing Arts. He said a new world is being built, and the door to enter the new world is to be a kind person.

Professor Kim Sung-jin attended Shen Yun at the Sohyang Theatre in Busan on Feb. 2. He said the key values that New York-based Shen Yun delivers can be summarized with three words: truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.

“In the history of world civilizations, truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance were common concepts people pursued,” he said. “Compassion means being kind. Tolerance includes withstanding pressure and sticking to one’s values until the end. Then we will be accepted by a beautiful world. The new world is inside truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance.”

As a sinologist, Mr. Kim knows traditional Chinese culture very well. He said Shen Yun is saving and presenting the real Chinese culture, which is very important.

“I can feel that Shen Yun presenting the long-standing culture through dance movements,” he said.

Mr. Kim said human beings are facing an unprecedented crisis, and he saw a road of hope in Shen Yun.

“The Chinese Communist regime’s virus is trying to harm all of us. We are trying all measures to stop the pandemic. I understood from Shen Yun that this epidemic will be eliminated,” he said. “The force which can solve the issues is the principles that the Creator gave us, which include truthfulness and kindness.”

Mr. Kim said that he understood from Shen Yun that human beings will have a bright future if we can always remember to persevere through true concepts like the three principles when facing hardships and difficulties.

“The light of the Law Wheel [seen in the performance] is sweeping away the darkness and guiding the world toward the right direction,“ he said. ”From Shen Yun, I understand that the good and the kind will overcome evil’s suppression, and these people will enter that new world.”

Mr. Kim believes that the concepts of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance are beyond any single religion, and are actually what all religions aim for.

“There are a few programs in Shen Yun that tell of how to get rid of ill fortune. It’s by following truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. I think people who find themselves without these principles should come to see Shen Yun, and change their mindsets. Then they will have the opportunity to enter the new world,” he said.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to show the beauty and goodness of “China before communism.” For 5,000 years China’s civilization was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, virtues like loyalty, propriety, wisdom, justice, and benevolence—values that are universal and shared the world over.

‘Die Without Regret’

Mr. Park Sun-je is 95 years old. He is the president of Busan Free Christian Federation. He was very touched after attending Shen Yun and said he “would die without regret because I attended the amazing performance.”
It shows that divine beings are saving people before they are to perish. This is formidable. I was very touched.

“Human beings are very depraved. Shen Yun is restoring people’s morality. It shows that divine beings are saving people before they are to perish. This is formidable. I was very touched,” he said.

Mr. Park was impressed by Shen Yun artists’ skills and techniques, but he said he was moved by their cooperation even more.

“The artists coordinated with each other accurately. I saw their restraint. I saw they all tolerate and support others. This is marvelous. I had a great time,” he said.

Mr. Park was surprised by the dynamic backdrop, which was technologically advanced and matched the traditional classical Chinese dance perfectly.

“The technique is superb. It’s fabulous,” he said.

Each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes, presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

‘My Soul Is Purified’

Ms. Kim Hee-mi, the chairwoman of the General Federation of Powerful Persons of the Republic of Korea, said her soul was purified by Shen Yun.

“The colors, the dances are extraordinary. This is an admirable performance,” she said. “I was very impressed. All dancers took each movement very seriously, and their expressions are very honest and touching.”

Ms. Kim said the dances are very pure, and she felt the efforts of Shen Yun artists to revive the traditional Chinese culture.

“From the beginning, I felt the program is working to purify our souls. I felt like I was returning to my hometown, and my soul was fully purified in the end,” she said with a big smile.

Ms. Kim appreciated that Shen Yun artists traveled from New York to Busan in order to deliver an inspiring and uplifting performance to the Korean people.

“I want to invite more people to attend the show,” she said. “I hope Shen Yun artists can keep on performing.”

Shen Yun was founded in 2006 and quickly grew to become a global phenomenon. The 2023 season will be its biggest yet, with its eight equally sized touring companies set to visit more than 180 cities across five continents.
