RALEIGH, N.C.—The artistry of a Shen Yun Performing Arts production is one that almost all audience members marvel at, but perhaps none more than classically trained performing artists themselves.

“It made me cry. It was very emotional for me because I danced all most of my life. And I thought it was beautiful, the colors and everything, and the synchronicity was amazing,” said Victoria Bradley, a retired ballet dancer, who saw the performance with family member John Price, a lawyer, at the Memorial Auditorium at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 18.

Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, renowned for revitalizing the ancient art form. Based in upstate New York, Shen Yun’s dancers are trained at the affiliate Fei Tian Academy of the Arts and Fei Tian College.

“They’re amazing. Their flexibility is just incredible and the synchronicity,” said Ms. Bradley. “It’s extremely hard. I mean, not everybody can do it. It takes a lot of training and dedication and commitment.”

Reilly Griffin, an opera singer who performed with the Charlotte Metropolitan Opera, also felt Shen Yun a special experience with her background in classical music and ballet.

“Oh, I love it. It’s so magical. I love the colors. It’s so colorful, and everything just seems to be coming to life on stage,” she said. “And to me, it’s just, it’s very, I’m very touched whenever I watch it.”

“I just, I have no words, I’m speechless. The talent is immense,” she said.

“I’m overwhelmed by how talented they are. It’s a privilege to see them perform here. I’m very blown away by it. I really, truly enjoy the arts so much. Hearing and seeing people dancing and singing, it’s such a big thing for me.”
Ms. Griffin said the cohesion of all the artistic elements of the production were something to behold. For example, in one piece, the female dancers wore costumes with long, silken sleeves that trailed through the air, and the costumes became part of the choreography.

“The movement was very beautiful,” she said. “All the dresses and the sleeves made it look like water, but also a flower at the same time, so it kind of brought everything to life.”

“Everything down to the choreography and the composition, it just felt like everything was connected perfectly, and as they were dancing, it seemed like every single movement was just articulated perfectly. It was beautiful,” she said.
