RALEIGH, N.C.—Ken McBride, a business consultant, and his wife watched Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Memorial Auditorium at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 18. Mr. McBride shared that they had gotten the tickets long ago for his wife’s birthday.

“Incredible. Just incredible,” Mr. McBride said. “All the visuals, everything. I love the fact that the culture comes from the Divine, and they’re bringing that back.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun’s mission has been to revive traditional Chinese culture and show audiences the beauty of China before communism.
According to Shen Yun’s website, China was once called the “Land of the Divine,” and the ancient Chinese believed that culture was a gift from the Heavens. Traditional Chinese culture is deeply rooted in the spiritual teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, elements which Shen Yun’s performance depicts.

“I like the spiritual aspect of it, that their culture and the people came 5,000 years ago from the heavens,” Mr. McBride said. “It made me feel great.”

He added that he liked that Shen Yun’s name meant “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” and that he thought Shen Yun’s opening number, which depicted divine beings following the Creator down to Earth to establish Chinese civilization very cool. Mr. McBride said he enjoyed the story-based dances in Shen Yun’s program, too.

Despite showing audiences all around the world the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yun is not allowed to performance in China, as the spirituality the performance depicts is against the Chinese Communist Party’s atheist ideologies. Mr. McBride expressed his love for traditional Chinese culture and voiced his wish that Shen Yun would “be able to someday bring that to their homeland, China.”

Mr. McBride urged others to also see the performance, and he said he felt like he was helping revive traditional Chinese culture just by being part of the audience.

“Come. Please come. I feel like I’m also giving a donation to help restore the Chinese culture. So it’s just not an event. I feel like I’m at a charitable event. It’s where we’re helping the Chinese to restore their culture.”
