RALEIGH, N.C.—Rob Huckabee, chief marketing officer of a bank, came upon Shen Yun Performing Arts the same week it would be in his city.

He thought, “Wow, we should do this. A great cultural opportunity,” and now recommends others do the same.

“You haven’t seen anything like this. You need to go. You need to find it, find out where they’re going, and go next time,” Mr. Huckabee said after seeing Shen Yun at the Memorial Auditorium at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 18.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization—China before communism—through the arts.
“I think we need more of this and other things with the arts to help the West understand better,” he said. “It’s beautiful ... elegant, and their athleticism is amazing ... love the dance, the artistry, costumes are amazing.”

For audience member Jane Burr, the China Shen Yun depicted was “a China full of faith and beauty.”

Traditional Chinese culture is a divinely inspired culture, and the ancient Chinese valued harmony between heaven, earth, and humankind. For thousands of years, Chinese society drew from the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, valuing spiritual self-betterment.

Mrs. Burr attended the Jan. 18 evening performance with her husband, Todd, an engineer, who gifted her tickets to the performance after they had seen it before a previous year and yearned to reexperience the beauty.

“Oh, it’s beautiful. The costumes and the story,” said Mrs. Burr. “When they tell the story, it’s the colors and the graceful dances, is why I come back. It’s beautiful.”

The couple were moved by the fact that Shen Yun cannot perform in China, not least of all because the program includes a story-based dance depicting true events of the religious persecution by the Chinese communist regime that continues today.

“That’s very touching when you see the pain and the reality of what’s going on when they bring it to light with the dances. It’s really incredible,” Mr. Burr said.

“We need to go get back to the spiritual,” Mrs. Burr said.
