DALLAS—Shen Yun Performing Arts offered a refreshing display of the arts for Ms. Brenda Baker, founder of an interior design firm, and Ms. Alyssa Moore, product development manager for an apparel company. They saw the performance at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Jan. 4.
“It’s beautiful. It’s just gorgeous,” Ms. Baker said.
The New York-based Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts.
Part of the Shen Yun experience includes a digital backdrop, which transports the audience to different eras and settings, while brilliant costumes give the audience a sense of divinely inspired, traditional Chinese attire.
The combination of color used throughout the production took Ms. Baker’s breath away.
“I love the colors,” she said. “They’re fresh. They’re just fresh and vibrant, and the fabrics add so much into that, the way they flow.”
Ms. Baker added that she gained artistic inspiration from seeing Shen Yun, and she planned on incorporating the color and flow she saw into her own work.
As a trained woodwind player, Ms. Baker was blown away by the orchestra’s oboe player. Both the technical skill of the musicians and the instrumentation of the orchestra truly impressed her.
“Love the music,” she said. “I think the music’s been great, for sure.”
Shen Yun’s music is unique in that it blends the sounds of East and West. Its orchestra combines traditional Chinese instruments into a full Western symphony, while its solo vocalists sing original Chinese compositions in the bel canto style.
Ms. Moore was especially touched by soprano Tianling Song, who sang before intermission.
“She was so good,” Ms. Moore said. “Very technically accurate, beautiful, artistic, movement with her voice, and her performance was wonderful.”
