DALLAS—Company Vice President Gary Peak and Betty Clark, an accountant, thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of Shen Yun Performing Arts after attending its evening performance on Jan. 24 at the Music Hall at Fair Park.

“I really love it. I love all the colors and the beautiful dancing and the dresses,” Mr. Peak said. “I’m very impressed. [classical Chinese dance] seem to tell the story a little better than traditional ballet.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun artists are highly trained in classical Chinese dance. Dating back thousands of years, it is one of the most athletic and expressive art forms in the world.
Shen Yun’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that take its audience on a ride through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China. Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, the artists tell tales from ancient times to the modern day.

Ms. Clark, too, said happily that “the show is very well put together.”

“I enjoy it very much. I can see that they’re very talented, beautiful people,” she added.

For Mr. Peak, Shen Yun’s storyline programs were especially moving. He loved the dances that recounted the origin of Chinese Valentine’s Day and a famous excerpt from the classical novel ‘Journey to the West.’

“They were really good and brought some humor to [the show,]” he stated.

Moreover, Mr. Peak was pleasantly surprised by Shen Yun’s live orchestra that accompanied all the dances.

“The music is great. I like the fact that it’s live music, that the orchestra is there,” he said. “It’s not a mini show, not a recording.”

According to the company’s website, Shen Yun’s orchestra is the first in the world to permanently combine ancient Chinese and Western instruments.

Using classical Western orchestration as the foundation, Shen Yun’s original compositions highlight traditional Chinese instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the pipa—an ancient Chinese lute. Bringing to its audience the best of both worlds.

Reflecting on the artists’ mission to bring back traditional culture and raise awareness for the ongoing human rights issues in modern-day China, Mr. Peak said he “respects the struggle [the artists] have to go through.”

Though he is not familiar with the situation in China, he thought Shen Yun’s message was “very significant because it brings the [communist regime’s] persecution of religion to light.”

Presenting a brand-new set of programs each year, Shen Yun has been delighting audiences around the world since 2006. This weekend, the company is hosting four consecutive performances in Dallas.
