‘Absolute Perfection': Oregon Theatergoer Says About Shen Yun

EUGENE, Ore.—Property manager Jeff Robinson felt “really, really pleased” as he stepped out of the Hult Center on the evening of Jan. 25, following Shen Yun Performing Arts’ opening show in Eugene.

Accompanied by his wife, Diana, a retired nurse, Mr. Robinson described the experience as both “fantastic” and “absolute perfection.”

“I am overwhelmed. I don’t think either one of us expected [Shen Yun] to be so entertaining, so colorful, and the perfect combination of the background with the dancers is just enthralling,” he said. “It’s spectacular.”

Mrs. Robinson said the performance was “so beautiful, so elegant ... Wonderful.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company dedicated to reviving China’s rich culture nearly lost under decades of communist rule. Its performances feature a series of short dances highlighting various regions of China, as well as solo musical pieces.

Mr. Robinson especially enjoyed the dance where the dancers’ long sleeves billowed and flowed like the gentle movement of water on stage. According to the company’s website, these sleeves were a part of ancient Chinese feminine attire representing humility and grace.

“The water sleeves were amazing, and it really does feel like you’re just floating in and out of water. It was beautiful,” he said.

Mrs. Robinson, on the other hand, appreciated the spiritual aspect of the performance and found the segment where divine beings chose to come to Earth to aid humanity particularly impactful.

She said she thought the performance “could not be better” and would like to thank the artists for all the training and the time and effort they’ve put into the show.

For Mr. Robinson, the message he said he would be bringing home with him was, “We are divine.”

“We’re not just something that just popped out of nowhere. There is a divine creator, a God, who loves us, and I really believe that, and I think that’s being conveyed through this program. It’s beautiful and very respectfully done,” he said.

“It’s spectacular. I know it opens up my heart to the Chinese people and what they’re presently going through, but also their past. What a beautiful past it is.”

Due to Shen Yun’s focus on reviving traditional culture and raising awareness for the human rights issues still ongoing under communist rule in present-day China, the company has been banned from performing in China by the Chinese Communist Party.
Mr. Robinson said he was saddened by this situation and urged the artists to keep up their work.

“Keep going. Keep going to every city possible. It’s great. We’ve seen the advertisements, the billboards in Utah, and all kinds of medium here in Oregon, and we’re like, ‘I guess we need to see this.’ I’m so glad we did.”
