LOS ANGELES—Alanna Ubach, actress, and Thom Russo, a multi-Grammy award-winning music producer, were thoroughly impressed with the artistry of a Shen Yun Performing Arts production after seeing it for the first time on Jan. 19.

“It’s phenomenal. It’s very graceful. There’s such a sophistication to it. And you learn a lot about history,” Ms. Ubach said after seeing Shen Yun with family at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has since its inception in 2006 taken as its mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Through music and dance, Shen Yun aims to show the world China before communism.

Ms. Ubach shared that the many aspects of the production were amazing—an orchestra performing beautiful music, an “immersive background” that blended fantasy and reality—“amazing,” she said.

Mr. Russo agreed, commending the music production of Shen Yun.

“Absolutely fantastic. Yes, on all levels, it was incredible,” he said. “The orchestra was pristine. All the compositions, everything. It was amazing. Absolutely amazing.”

Shen Yun’s orchestra is unique in that combines classical Western and ancient Chinese instruments, and the original compositions it performs to accompany the dance use ancient Chinese melodies as well as classical Western arrangement techniques.

Mr. Russo found that the East-West blend “worked incredibly well,” aiding the storytelling of five millennia of Chinese civilization.

“Amazing. It was so much content in two hours that I’m overwhelmed with the information—and all in a wonderful way,” he said.

He said he felt “uplifted and moved emotionally” during the performance, especially seeing so many heavenly scenes in Shen Yun.

Mr. Russo was filled with gratitude for the artists after the performance, adding that he wanted to thank them.

“Incredible. Inspiration. Very, very inspirational,” he said. “It’s like you empower people. Thank you very much.”
