DALLAS—“It was a phenomenal performance, and it should be shared everywhere,” said Mr. Jamey Mauldin, executive vice president of home services BathLogix and Aspenmark Roofing and Solar, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts on Jan. 4.

“We’re blown away about it. I mean, it’s just gorgeous,” said Mr. Mauldin at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. “It’s so colorful, and the music is great; it’s just very visual.”

The New York-based Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through the performing arts, emphasizing classical Chinese dance and has a unique orchestra blending East and West.

Mr. Mauldin was incredibly impressed with Shen Yun’s use of color, from the variety of costumes to the digital backdrop.

For each season, Shen Yun puts on all-new performances, which include hundreds of costume pieces. The costumes give a sense of the traditional attire of China that are said to be inspired by the heavens.

Shen Yun’s digital backdrop depicts landscapes from heavenly scenes to the many regions of China, taking its audiences on a journey through the past.

“They really thought it out, and it’s just stunning,” Mr. Mauldin said.

Shen Yun’s orchestra, which incorporates instrumentation unlike any other in the world, was also a stunning experience for Mr. Mauldin and his family. The orchestra combines traditional Chinese instruments into a full Western symphony orchestra, utilizing instruments like the plucked pipa—the Chinese lute—played alongside violins and cellos.

Erhu virtuoso Qi Xiaochun played along with the orchestra, as well as a in solo performance. The two-stringed instrument has a history of over 4,000 years and is incredibly expressive.

“Fantastic. I really enjoyed it,” Mr. Mauldin said.
