HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Jenne Lauren spent years hoping to see
Shen Yun Performing Arts, putting images of the classical Chinese dance performance on her vision boards. Seeing it finally at the Dolby Theater on April 6, she decided she would see Shen Yun again in other cities in the future, too.
“It was amazing. Absolutely sublime,” said Ms. Lauren, an author and publisher. “A celebration, symphony of art, culture, dance, beauty—divine.”
“It was magical, very emotional, very moving, deep,” she said.
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier
classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
Ms. Lauren has had a long-held fascination with traditional Chinese culture, and spent hours in the library reading about ancient Chinese art, literature, stories, and
history, she said. Shen Yun had brought it all to life.
“I love the colors, the
fabrics, the whimsical way of movement of the Chinese ladies when they dance,“ she said. ”That motion was just enchanting.”
“I highly recommend people who want to experience the beauty of ancient Chinese culture, civilization, the wisdom, and the message was encouraging because it was redemptive and about kindness and love,” she said.
Ms. Lauren said
Shen Yun was entertaining, as well as deep.
“There’s so much that was communicated, so many messages and layers,” she said. “It was entertaining, it was funny, it was cute, it was adorable, and then it was glorious and beautiful.
Shen Yun showed a Chinese culture that was connected to the divine, far from the modern culture instituted by the communist regime in China today, Ms. Lauren felt.
“When we show kindness, and we show love ... we don’t do it to be rewarded, but there is a reward, and there’s victory and pointing to heaven and our Creator and all the beauty,” she said. “And I think it’s important. I pray for our brothers and sisters in China—I pray for their souls, their freedom.”
Ms. Lauren said she also aims to encourage and inspire with her books, and
Shen Yun inspired her.
“It’s just magical and just pure, majestic even,” she said. “The performance was flawless. I
’m in awe by the talent, the dedication, the determination, and the grace of the performers.”With reporting by Michael Ye.
