CALGARY, Alberta—For those who are unfamiliar with Chinese culture, seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time is always an eye-opening experience.

“The colors, the performances, the stories—everything. I’ve never seen anything like it. Beautiful,” shared Mrs. Rawlyck, who is retired.

Shen Yun is based in New York and its mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.

“The culture, they’re teaching us the culture, they’re teaching us different parts of China—how they dance, and their beliefs,” said Mrs. Rawlyck.

Shen Yun’s artists are trained in classical Chinese dance, one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
“It takes a lot of discipline to dance the way those people do. You don’t learn that overnight. [They] obviously work hard to learn that,” said Ernie Rawlyck, the owner of a radio frequency identification company.
He added that he was impressed with every part of the dancing, “because they dance in unison, nobody is out of sync. It’s very precise, and very nice to watch.”

Mrs. Rawlyck shared that the Water Sleeves dance left a deep impression on her, but each dance was better than the last.

China was once the land of the divine, and in many of Shen Yun’s dances, good people in need receive miracles from the divine.

“They believe in the heavens, and [they believe in] miracles. It’s beautiful,” Mrs. Rawlyck said.

Shen Yun’s use of its digital backdrop is patented. The versatility of technology allows the set to change scenes in the blink of an eye, giving the stage endless possibilities.
“That’s very good, the way they do that. The big screen and they hop in it and disappear and turn into something else,” Mr. Rawlyck said.

He added that seeing the way the artists integrated the animated backdrop into each dance was an enjoyable surprise.

“We just haven’t ever seen anything like it before. Just beautiful,” Mrs. Rawlyck said.
