A rugby player’s girlfriend got the surprise of her life when her boyfriend faked a leg injury, then got down on one knee to propose to her—in the middle of the field.
The initially worrisome scene that turned into a happy moment occurred on March 18 during a Yorkshire Men’s League match. Chris Robinson, 30, was playing for amateur side Greetland All Rounders when he orchestrated being tackled to the ground before seeming to roll in pain.
The video, which was captured on the referee’s GoPro head camera, shows Robinson’s partner, Amanda Tuckwell, 43, running over thinking the worst had happened.
Tuckwell, who had recently undergone first aid training, couldn’t believe her eyes when a muddy Robinson rose from the mud and got down on one knee with a ring in his hand.
“I thought he'd broken his leg!” Tuckwell said. “I was very shocked.
“When he got up I thought he must have been in shock but then he got on one knee. I was very, very surprised.”
“If I'd booked a trip somewhere she would have guessed what was going on,” he said. “I wanted to do it in a way she wouldn’t expect.”
Tuckwell agreed. “I usually know what Chris is going to do before he does,” she said, “so it had to be something different.”
However, Robinson said that he was a bit nervous since he was worried about what his opponents, the Kirkburton Cougars would say.
“[B]ut we were winning comfortably so it wasn’t a close game,” Robinson said. “I wouldn’t have done it otherwise!”
The couple met on the dating app Bumble five years ago. Two months ago, Robinson began to plan the perfect proposal. He waited for the right moment to pop the question at a home game.
