A dad of three from England has transformed his previously damp and unused basement into a rustic bar that can hold up to 30 guests.

Adam Cone, from Sheffield, spent nine months creating a stunning underground bar in his home that now hosts family film nights, quiz nights, poker nights, football matches, and even family birthday parties.

The 34-year-old excavator operator says that 80 percent of the materials he used were reclaimed and the total project cost him 2,500 pounds (US$3,270), including a double fridge, a beer pump, lighting, and some of the other fixtures and fittings that he couldn’t get for free.

Explaining more about the place, Adam said it was a waste place that was full of dampness and wasn’t suitable for storage, as things would get ruined.

“We enjoy having family and friends around at our house so it made sense to make something to host guests but also a clean and cozy place for the family to spend time,” he shared.

The revamped space, Adam shares, is now a rustic and cozy space that has an array of traditional and industrial elements.

Adam used timber that he got from work, old pallets, and items that he found on Facebook Marketplace to create the space.

“All the tiles were free and other bits we used were extremely cheap, such as the door and flooring which we got from Facebook,” he said. “Other people chipped in to help us out too.”

Adam’s friend’s father upholstered the corner seat and his mother-in-law upholstered the chairs for them. Additionally, Adam shares that his friend’s father helped him dig out the floor, which had to go down nearly two feet because they needed to gain enough headroom to stand up.

Apart from his dad’s help, Adam’s kids and friends also chipped in to support the project.

“My son and eldest daughter carried bricks out from the original floor to be recycled into a new patio outside,” he said. “And a few friends also helped get the concrete in to make the new concrete slab for the floor.”

Adam claims that he has always been a DIY enthusiast and said that he used existing skills to complete the project. However, he shared that, through this project, he has also learned some new techniques such as how to source materials for as little money as possible, since he is someone who just buys things without looking at the price.

After the completion of the project, Adam said that the transformed space has given them a brilliant family room, where they have already hosted and enjoyed numerous birthday parties, film nights, game nights, and family quizzes, all at the comfort of not leaving the house.

“It also saves on the babysitters because when the children are in bed and asleep, it allows us to continue the night with family and friends knowing that the children are safe,” Adam said. “My son, Joseph, had part of his birthday party down there last week, and Ruth, my wife, had hers in there over Christmas with about 30 guests down in there at the same time!”
