The son of a fallen police officer in Louisiana was seen off to school by his family in blue as he set out for his first day of kindergarten.
With his mother present, Liam is shown sitting on a sheriff’s motorcycle with officers smiling on either side.
The Denham Springs Police Department (DSPD) shared the photos of his bittersweet day, a milestone for Liam that his late father, Corporal Shawn Kelly, was unable to witness in life.
In the caption, the department solemnly wrote: “Cpl. Shawn Kelly, our brother in blue who passed away in June, would be so proud. His son, Liam, started kindergarten today.
“We wanted him to know just how much his blue family supported him, and we were honored to help make sure that Liam’s first day was unforgettable.”
Cpl. Kelly began his career in law enforcement with the Louisiana Department of Corrections in 1994. He later joined DSPD in 2019 as a taser instructor and field training officer.
From his vehicle, the suspect reportedly shot Cpl. Kelly several times upon his arrival. The officer later died from his injuries in a hospital on June 2.
The suspect, who, reportedly, had been involved in several road rage incidents, fled from the scene and was shot and killed by a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy, the station reported.
Denham Springs Police Chief Rodney Walker said in a statement on June 4 that Cpl. Kelly was “a great public servant, a great father, grandfather, husband and just a great human being.”
