Kris Sipe, 47, who has been colorblind since birth, decided to buy the glasses on a whim, uncertain they would work. A video captures Kris trying on the glasses at home and being immediately mesmerized by the vibrant colors in his living room.
“It was so overwhelming to experience for the first time,” said Sipe, a Home Depot worker from Tulsa, Oklahoma. “I wasn’t even sure the glasses would work, so to have everything changed so much was crazy to me.
“It felt like a big light had been turned on and everything was illuminated.”
After taking in the colorful details of his surroundings, Sipe watched his favorite movie, “The Wizard of Oz,” and was amazed to see the horse in the Emerald City change colors.
It was the first time he'd ever seen the color purple.
He explained how his colorblindness has affected his perception: “With my regular sight, the best way to explain it is that things are a bit duller, and I don’t see exact colors. To me, a green traffic light just looks like a white light, and rainbows are just a yellow line.”
Sipe was born with this condition, but his parents only realized he was colorblind when he wasn’t able to match colors in kindergarten.
Although Sipe has had the glasses since 2021, he doesn’t wear them all the time. He chooses to put them on when he wants to fully experience the colors around him.
“It just feels too much to be seeing all these bright colors all the time. But if I know something is particularly colorful, I will flip them on and have a look.”
Sipe continues to feel amazed by the simple things that he comes across in his daily life. For example, the prettiest thing he’s ever seen is a yellow fire hydrant. “It was just so bright and vibrant,” he said.
