A woman who had been battling infertility was scheduled to undergo an operation to get pregnant but had the procedure halted at the last moment by medical staff who told her she was expecting naturally.
Morgan Allen, 28, and her husband, Kyle Allen, 33, a business owner, had tried to conceive for a year when Ms. Allen decided to undergo a laparoscopy in July 2020.
The surgery was due to endometriosis—a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in places it shouldn’t such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
As she was getting ready to head into the operating theatre, her doctor sprinted into the room and told nurses to stop prepping her for the procedure.
Pre-surgery tests had revealed Ms. Allen, who works as a photographer in Detroit, had fallen pregnant naturally and didn’t need to go through with the procedure after all.
“The surgeon came in and told the nurses to stop prepping me,” she said. “He told me that scans showed I was pregnant.”
Delighted with the news, Ms. Allen was overcome with emotion but “tried to hold it together.”
Nurses bought balloons from the shop downstairs to celebrate, said Ms. Allen, who broke the news to her husband from her hospital bed.
“They made it such a special way for me to tell him,” she said.
Due to her condition, the pregnancy was deemed high-risk, and Ms. Allen visited the doctors every three days.
However, despite it all, the parents were excited to welcome their first daughter, Lani, at 37 weeks gestation on March 11, 2021. She weighed 5 lbs 14oz.
“When I held Lani for the first time, it was really incredible,” she said. “I was speechless - it felt like everything was all worth it.
“I felt like we were finally a family.”
Ms. Allen had previously been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that can cause hyperthyroidism and restricted growth. Baby Lani inherited the condition and thus stayed in the hospital for a week so doctors could monitor her.
The couple were both excited and nervous about being parents to Lani, whom her mom describes as an extremely funny, outgoing, and big-hearted toddler.
Miraculously, 16 months later, Ms. Allen fell pregnant with the couple’s second daughter, Remi, who was born on Feb. 16, 2023, weighing 9 pounds. Since welcoming both the girls into their family, Mr. Allen said he has loved being a girl-dad.
“I am over the moon,” he said. “We have waited for this moment for so long.”
Remi’s mom says she has a big personality, just like her sister, and is very funny and sweet.
“I had always dreamed of being a mum, but I wasn’t sure I'd get the chance.
“Now it is here I feel very fulfilled, very lucky, and blessed.
“I know a lot of people don’t have the outcome we had.”
