It’s a story as old as time: a damsel in distress, a daring rescue, and the heroes we didn’t know we needed. Except, in this case, the damsel was a female cat named John.

Yes, John is a girl. Yes, it’s a long story.

John, a British black cat with an unconventional name, was discovered with her head poking out of one end of a drainpipe on Nov. 23, unable to free herself. The Clevedon Fire Brigade was called to the scene, responding to what they described as a unique challenge.

“A crew from Clevedon were called at 09:55 this morning to a cat not stuck up a tree but stuck in a drainpipe!” they wrote on Facebook.

Armed with ladders, small tools, and big hearts, the firefighters assessed the scene. Their solution? Cut out a section of the pipe with John still in it— the “easiest and least distressing option.”

John was freed from the confines of the garage, the pipe still encircling her neck and her defiant glare unwavering. She was then rushed to the capable hands of the team at Vets4Pets Clevedon, where she was sedated to allow for the safe removal of the remaining pipe from around her neck.

The vet team administered oxygen therapy and placed an intravenous catheter to ensure John’s comfort during the procedure. After some precise pipe removal, John emerged unharmed and ready to receive cuddles. She was soon reunited with her relieved owner.

Social Media Reaction

Clevedon Fire Brigade’s Facebook post about the incident sparked amusement and affection online, particularly due to the cat’s name. The firefighters acknowledged the curiosity, stating, “John (Yes John) the cat had got herself (Yes John is a girl, it’s a long story) stuck in a garage drainpipe.”
Vets4Pets Clevedon also shared the story on their social media, describing how the day took an “unexpected turn” with John’s arrival. They highlighted the collaboration with the fire brigade and expressed relief at John’s good health after her ordeal.

A Happy Ending

Safely back at home, John enjoyed a well-deserved nap after an “overwhelming morning,” according to her owner Cassie.

While the reason for her unconventional name remains a mystery, one thing is clear: John’s tale has made a lasting impression on everyone involved.
