A heartwarming video has captured the precious moment a woman surprised her husband with news of their unexpected pregnancy after trying for 14 years.
Brie Owens, 37, revealed to her husband Stephen Owens, 39, that she was pregnant minutes after taking a test that came back positive.
A video that captured the moment shows Mr. Owens, a data analyst, breaking down in tears of joy.
In August 2023, Ms. Owens’s period was late, but the couple didn’t think it could be because Ms. Owens was pregnant and, instead, assumed it must be stress-related.
“I’m very regular but we had a really stressful month,” said the stay-at-home mom who was busy with remodeling plans and with her mom in the hospital.
However, when Ms. Owens took the test, she was shocked that it turned out to be positive.
“I just wanted to confirm that I wasn’t [pregnant]. It was a confirmation deal, not a hopeful deal,” she said. “Stephen didn’t know about the test ... I wanted to surprise him.”
The couple from Atlanta decided to try for kids in 2008. However, when they didn’t have any success, they decided to leave it to fate.
“At the beginning, we tried for a year and a half but, it started to just feel exhausting and silly,” Ms. Owens said. “It had always been an ‘if it happens, it happens’ kind of thing, but ... we never stopped trying.”
The couple was never told by doctors that they were infertile, and they'd always wanted to use natural means and not treatments such as IVF.
However, since they'd always wanted to have children, they decided adoption would be the best option for them. They started the process of adopting their first child, Joseph, in 2013 and were approved two years later.
Since their first adoption, they’ve adopted four more children from foster care. Although they didn’t plan to welcome so many children, they couldn’t stand the idea of not helping as many kids as possible.
“If the situation presents itself, we would not send a child from our home if adoption or permanent guardianship was an option,” Ms. Owens said.
After 14 years of infertility and welcoming four adopted children into their lives, the couple is now expecting their fifth child and couldn’t be more excited.
“After so long you don’t even think about it,” Ms. Owens said. “You might hope for it, but you don’t expect it.”
Although the news hasn’t yet completely sunk in yet, Ms. Owens is excited to share the news with her friends and family.
