A heartwarming reunion unfolded on Monday, Nov. 25, in San Antonio, Texas, when retired military working dog Yyacob finally reunited with his former handler, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Payton May. The duo shared an extraordinary bond forged over nine months of service in Iraq, where they undertook dangerous and important tasks together such as patrols, vehicle inspections, and screening for weapons or explosives.

Yyacob, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, devoted nearly seven years of his life to military service as a highly skilled explosives detection and patrol dog. His career was distinguished not only by his contributions to the safety of military personnel but also by his role in protecting civilians and even U.S. presidents during critical operations.

Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane, the organization that made the reunion possible, said, “We are honored to bring Yyacob home to his best friend and ensure he enjoys the retirement he so deserves after his years of service to our nation.”

Elite Training and a Special Bond

The heartfelt bond between Staff Sgt. May and Yyacob began during their rigorous training for the elite Patrol Explosive Detection Dog – Enhanced Course, a demanding 60-day program that equipped both man and dog with advanced skills in off-leash explosive detection. This training enabled Yyacob to operate independently, working at distances of up to a football field from his handler.

During their deployment in Iraq, the pair’s connection grew even stronger, as they worked side by side around the clock. They lived together in close quarters, often sharing a twin-sized bed. Despite Yyacob’s impressive role, Staff Sgt. May fondly remembers him as a “big baby” who loved to snuggle and frequently took over the bed.

In 2022, the pair faced an emotional separation when Staff Sgt. May received a new assignment at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Yyacob remained behind at Fort Drum, leaving Staff Sgt. May heartbroken.

The opportunity for a reunion finally arose when Yyacob’s retirement was announced. Staff Sgt. May immediately contacted American Humane, a nonprofit dedicated to the well-being of animals, including military working dogs. The organization had recently helped one of Staff Sgt. May’s fellow handlers to reunite with his service dog, which motivated Staff Sgt. May to reach out. American Humane stepped in to ensure the reunion took place, covering all transportation costs and committing to provide lifetime veterinary care for Yyacob.

The reunion marks the beginning of a new journey for Yyacob and Staff Sgt. May. In 2025, the pair will depart for Italy, where Staff Sgt. May will be stationed next. He is eager to provide Yyacob with the peaceful and well-deserved retirement he has earned, and life in Italy promises to be a relaxing chapter.
